International NLP Coaching Council
Professional Standards
The Council standard is designed to make ethical, competent and responsible NLP coaching easier to recognise. It places client welfare first, followed by professional integrity, competence and responsible representation of NLP.
The problem we see
Rapid growth without consistent standards can leave clients exposed and responsible practitioners poorly distinguished from irresponsible practice.
- Ethical expectations vary widely between training routes and communities.
- Claims are sometimes made without reasonable support.
- Influence can be used for the practitioner’s interests rather than the client’s.
- Coaching may be presented as a substitute for medical or psychological treatment.
- Without a clear accountability route, public trust is weakened.
The standard we set
The Founding Charter gives practical force to professional responsibility. It defines four ordered principles, seven practitioner commitments, professional directives and bright lines that must not be crossed.
Client welfare
Practitioners protect wellbeing, safety and autonomy. They obtain informed agreement, respect confidentiality and refer when a client’s needs exceed coaching.
Professional integrity
Practitioners represent qualifications, services, fees and limits accurately. They do not exploit trust, foster dependence or use influence against a client’s interests.
Competence and development
Practitioners work within their training and ability, continue to learn, use reflective practice and supervision appropriately, and remain fit to practise.
Responsible representation of NLP
Practitioners describe NLP coaching truthfully. They do not present coaching as treatment, claim to cure illness or guarantee outcomes that cannot be supported.
Across every coaching domain
The context may change, but the duty of care does not. The standard is intended to apply across life, executive, business, health and wellness, relationship, performance and career coaching, as well as NLP training.
